Pryor Public Schools Director of Special Education Leslie Burnett recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to represent Oklahoma at the Special Education Legislative Summit. The event brought special education leaders together to advocate for federal policies and resources that support students with disabilities and the educators who serve them.

During the summit, Burnett met with five members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Congressman Josh Brecheen, who represents the Pryor area. The group also met with both of Oklahoma’s U.S. senators.

Among the issues discussed were continued and increased funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, commonly known as IDEA; concerns surrounding potential changes to the U.S. Department of Education; and the development of national career incentives to encourage more individuals to enter teacher preparation programs.

Burnett described the experience as an insightful look into the governmental process and the important role advocacy plays at the local, state, and national levels.

“The takeaway for me is that everyone should advocate at every level,” Burnett said. “Your voice matters.”

Continuing to bring new knowledge and perspectives back to the district, Burnett and members of the Pryor Public Schools Special Education Department also attended the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Special Services Conference in Oklahoma City in late July. The conference provided additional opportunities for the team to learn, collaborate, and prepare to support Pryor students and families during the upcoming school year.
